|
| · During
the summer months, June through September waves will be
higher on the South Shore. |
| · During
the winter months, October through May the waves will be
higher on the North Shore. |
| · The
East Side can be dangerous anytime due to the wind. |
| · Only
7 of the 40 beaches have lifeguards so take some precautions
when entering the water here. |
| · Watch
the water for 30 minutes or so before you enter the water,
watch for signs that the water is moving rapidly, constant
swirling in calm areas, and waves breaking far offshore.
|
| · If
you don't know what to watch for don't enter the water without
consulting a local authority, or pick up the safety guide
published by the Kauai Ocean Rescue Council which is available
at the airport or at the Visitors Bureau headquarters on
Rice Street in Lihue (808) 245-3971. Many rescues are attempted
on the north and west shores and not all is successful,
never swim, snorkel or dive alone. |
| In general
you will find the water rougher here than on Maui, the beaches
a bit more rustic but what you won't find are the crowds
and the hustle-bustle of the usual resort. Here you will
find the laid back relaxing attitude that you think of when
you picture the Pacific Islands. |
