Kaua'i Hula Lessons
Kaua'i - The Garden Isle

You can go to all the luaus, even get up on stage for a song to imitate the dancers but the only place I've found during my Hawai'i visits to actually learn the dance is to go to the Harbor Mall on Kaua'i on Wednesday at noon and meet Aunty Bev and her music group. They play the different ukuleles (pronounced oo-kah-lay-lee, it does not start with a Y- Aunty Bev will be sure to tell you this) and the nose flute. Words to some of the songs are below.

HU KI LAU
( this is one you will 'amatuer dance' at most luaus)

Oh, we're going to the hu_ki_lau,
A_hu_ki, A_hu_ki, The hu_ki_lau,

Everybody loves the hu_ki_lau,
Where the lau_lau, is the kau_kau,
At the big lu_au.

We throw our nets, out into the sea,
And all the Ama, Ama,
Come swimming to me.

Oh, we're going to the hu_ki_lau,
A_hu_ki, hu_ki, hu_ki, hu_ki_lau.

What a wonderful day for fishing,
The old Hawaiian way,
And the hu_ki_lau nets, Go swishing,
Down in the old La_ie Bay.

repeat.
