Maui - the Valley Isle

To us the charm of Hawaii can be found in the small towns that people pass through on their way to Haleakala and the Hana Highway, tucked away in the back of strip malls and off the main streets. Here you find the people who love The Hawaiian Islands for their soul.

There are more sights to see in Hawai'i all you have to do is open your eyes or turn your head.

One of the things that was very different on Maui was the sunsets. I grew up in Michigan where the sunset got lost in the trees before it hit the horizon. Now I live in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado where the sun sets behind the mountains and we have a twilight called alpenglow. On Maui the sunset is totally different. You get a very distant horizon where you can actually see the sun melt into the sea, and if you are lucky you can see the "green flash" of St. Elmo's fire. I try every night during my visits but have never had the fortune to see it; my friends that live there say I must be blinking at the wrong moment. Guess I'll have to keep visiting until I see it, then I'll find another reason to return.
